A place of remembrance and reflection, the 9/11 memorial, opened in 2011, is situated downtown with twin reflecting pools, each an acre in size. These reflecting pools stand within the footprints of where the Twin Towers once stood. Inscribed on the sides of the pools are the nearly 3,000 names of those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001.
The memorial’s design is sustainable, right down to the pavement and soil, which also serves as the roof of the underground museum which will open to the public sometime this spring.
The grounds are populated with trees and benches to rest both your mind and body on. Most special of all of the trees has to be The Survivor Tree, a nimble piece of greenery that miraculously survived the attacks, and still stands after undergoing some rehabilitation. It’s truly a symbol of the beauty found in resilience.
At night, the waterfall’s lights are turned on and the names on the pools are magically lit up. In addition, a white rose is placed within each individual name upon his or her birthday.
The 9/11 memorial is an emotional and educational experience which is a definite must–see when visiting Manhattan.
