We’d be remiss if we didn’t mention the biggest of big events this week in New York City. We aren’t talking about the spectacular shouting match between Uncle Herman and Aunt Betsy that happens over carving the turkey every year. We’re talking about the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade! It runs from 77th Street and Central Park West, to Macy’s Herald Square on 34th, starting at 9 AM on Thanksgiving Day!
More Hot Air than 99 Red Balloons
The fun really starts the night before, from 3 PM to 10 PM. One of the main draws of the Thanksgiving Day Parade is the flotilla of giant balloons that are flown each year. How big? Several stories high big. Takes 90 or so people to hold the strings big. Filling them up takes hours and a lot of patience. It’s a fascinating process, and you can get a great view of it in the area surrounding the Museum of Natural History. Head to 79th and Columbus Avenue for the fun!
I Love a Parade
On Thanksgiving Day, be sure to arrive early to get the perfect view! Believe it or not, but some people start camping out on the west side of Central Park West as early as 6 AM, near where the parade starts. From there, the route proceeds down to Columbus Circle, where it turns on Central Park South. Then it turns south onto 6th Avenue, which means a great view from 59th to 38th Streets.
Be aware, there’s a restriction on viewing on 6th Avenue between 34th and 38th Streets, and at Macy’s Herald Square. That’s the area for the national television broadcast. Grab another spot and watch the balloons and performances!
On Thanksgiving, Seastreak’s ferry departs New Jersey’s Highlands Terminal at 7 AM! That gives you plenty of time to get a great place to watch the parade. We head back to New Jersey at 1 PM!
